What is the Safety Train?
The TRANSCAER® Safety Train is a railway tank car that has been converted into a classroom on wheels for the purpose of training emergency responders. Every spring, the Safety Train will begin its journey across Canada, making stops in communities where dangerous goods travel – from coast to coast.
By traveling to communities, TRANSCAER has established partnerships between manufacturers, distributors, carriers, emergency responders, government agencies, and residents – an important first step in preparing for any transportation emergency.
The TRANSCAER Safety Train raises awareness about rail safety and emergency response for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods by providing hands-on learning opportunities for first responders.
History of the TRANSCAER Safety Train in Canada
The original TRANSCAER Safety Train was developed by CIAC in 1990. It was the first training car of its kind in Canada – a concept that has since been adopted by other organizations across North America and around the world.
After nearly three decades of providing a unique backdrop for municipalities, emergency responders, and residents to learn about the transportation of dangerous goods from TRANSACER members, TRANSCAER’s Safety Train was officially retired on March 28, 2018.
Following the retirement of the original Safety Train, CIAC was granted funding to fit-up a railway tank car to develop the new TRANSCAER Safety Train as well as a new virtual reality version of the Safety Train for communities that the train can not reach.
Following several years of planning, designing, and sourcing parts, CIAC is eager to launch the new TRANSCAER Safety Train in 2025.
